Do jantar da tia, do próprio discurso idiota, do vinho e da dança, da alegria da despedida no vestíbulo, do prazer da caminhada na neve ao longo do rio. Pobre Tia Julia! Logo ela também se juntaria como sombra à sombra de Patrick Morkan e do cavalo Johnny. Por um instante ele havia flagrado um olhar de desalento enquanto ela cantava Arrayed for the Bridal. Logo talvez ele também pudesse estar sentado naquela mesma sala de estar, vestido de preto, com o chapéu de seda no colo. As cortinas estariam fechadas e a Tia Kate estaria sentada ao lado dele, chorando e assoando o nariz e contando como Julia havia morrido. Ele vasculharia os pensamentos em busca de palavras de consolo, mas encontraria apenas palavras desajustadas e inúteis. Não havia dúvida: isto aconteceria muito em breve.
O ar do quarto enregelou-lhe os ombros. Deslizou com todo cuidado para baixo das cobertas e acomodou-se ao lado da esposa. Um a um estavam todos se transformando em sombras. Melhor passar com bravura ao outro mundo, em meio à glória de uma paixão, do que esmaecer e murchar com as agruras da idade. Gabriel pensou em como por tantos anos a mulher deitada ao seu lado havia guardado em segredo no coração a imagem dos olhos do amado dizendo que não queria mais viver.
Lágrimas generosas encheram os olhos de Gabriel. Nunca tinha nutrido aquele sentimento em relação a mulher alguma, mas sabia que devia ser amor. As lágrimas ficaram-lhe mais pesadas nos olhos e, na penumbra, imaginou discernir o vulto de um rapaz de pé sob a copa de uma árvore gotejante. Havia outros vultos por perto. A alma dele havia se aproximado daquela região habitada pelas infindáveis hostes dos mortos. Percebia, mas não conseguia apreender, a existência tênue e obstinada que levavam. A própria identidade de Gabriel esvanecia-se em um mundo cinzento e impalpável: o mundo sólido em que aqueles mortos outrora tinham vivido começava a se dissolver e a desaparecer.
Um discreto tamborilar no vidro fez com que se voltasse em direção à janela. Tinha começado a nevar outra vez. Observou distraidamente os flocos prateados e escuros que caíam enviesados contra a luz da rua. Estava na hora de começar a jornada rumo ao ocidente. Sim, os jornais estavam certos: estava nevando em toda a Irlanda. A neve caía em todas as partes da escura planície central, nas montanhas inóspitas, caía sobre as escuras ondas amotinadas do Rio Shannon. Caía, também, em todas as partes do cemitério solitário na montanha onde Michael Furey estava enterrado.
