A agência espacial americana, a Nasa, anunciou ontem a descoberta do primeiro planeta com tamanho parecido com o da terra e que gira ao redor de uma estrela como o Sol.
O planeta fica a 600 anos-luz de distância e foi detectado pela sonda Kepler, lançada em 2009 para descobrir novas “Terras” pelo espaço.
O Kepler 22b fica na chamada ‘zona habitável’. Isso significa dizer que o novo astro se encontra em uma região que propicia a formação de água em estado líquido em sua superfície e, por conseguinte, a possibilidade de abrigar vida.
Em fevereiro, os astrínomos da Nasa haviam anunciado uma lista com 54 astros que poderiam ser habitáveis. Desses, apenas Kepler 22b foi confirmado como planeta.
O astro possui um raio 2,4 vezes maior que o da Terra e gira ao redor de sua estrela em 290 dias. Os cientistas ainda não sabem dizer qual é a composição do planeta ” se é rochoso, líquido ou gasoso.
“Este é um marco importante (“¦) para se achar um gêmeo da Terra”, disse Douglas Hudgins, que faz parte do programa Kepler, o telescópio espacial que mantém um monitoramento de pelo menos 150 mil estrelas.
Além de achar o primeiro planeta habitável, o Kepler identificou mil novos corpos celestes que se enquadram como candidatos a planeta, o dobro da contagem anterior.
